During the last years green tea got more and more popular in Bulgaria. It is known that green tea supports the health and inspirit the body. But is it able to prevent diseases and affect the course of a disease in a positive way, like new scientific studies suggest?

Many of the bioactive compounds in the tea leaves do make it into the final drink, which contains large amounts of important nutrients. It is loaded with polyphenols like flavonoids and catechins, which function as powerful antioxidants, vitamin B and C, tannins and caffeine.
Swiss scientists believe that green tea speeds up metabolism and gives tone to the body tissues. This helps keep weight in normal rates and stimulates faster weight loss. The EGCG catechin, contained in green tea, removes drowsiness and relieves stress levels. Amino acid teanin, which enhances the aroma and taste of tea, helps to synthesize and release dopamine - the pleasure hormone. Thus green tea contributes to a healthy, tight and happy body.
But that's not all. Antioxidants in green tea favor normalization of blood pressure and blood sugar and lower levels of bad cholesterol. In this way, they provide protection from cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes and help in the prevention of oncological diseases. The EGCG catechin helps slowing the build up of arterial walls plaque.
Recommended daily dose is 3 to 4 cups of freshly brewed tea. A cup of tea contains 50 to 150 mg of polyphenols. When taking green tea extract as a supplement, e.g. tigovit, the recommended dose is 3 capsules a day, which provides 390 mg of catechins.
